Why altitude does not rescue the bottom of this table
Afriski is the clearest case in the index. Its model cell sits at 3079 m, higher than 43 of the other 52 destinations, and it scored 0/10 with a mean opening-week depth of 0.8 cm. Three thousand metres in the subtropics at latitude -28.82 is high, dry air. Snow needs moisture arriving as well as cold, and the storm track has to reach you.
The same reading explains the Andean scores from the other direction. Portillo sits under a reliable winter westerly flow at 3223 m and was snow-ready in 10 of 10 opening weeks at a mean of 132.7 cm, the second deepest opening-week mean in the entire index.
June is the opening, not the season
