Portillo snow report

One hotel, one road, no town, and a Saturday-to-Saturday week that everyone begins and ends together. Thirteen lifts total just 6.6 km, four of them va-et-vient slingshot tows that haul five skiers abreast up faces too avalanche-prone to carry towers. The road is the real risk: in 2026 it shut for roughly three weeks and guests arrived by helicopter.

Why it snows here

Pacific cold fronts and atmospheric rivers are forced up the main cordillera at the Los Libertadores pass, and modelling shows the barrier does most of the work: cut the model topography to a fifth of its height and the orographic precipitation on the windward slopes all but disappears. With the hotel at 2,880 m, Portillo sits above the freezing level in storms where lower Chilean resorts flip to rain.

Reading Portillo like a forecaster

The number that matters most at Portillo is the difference between the base (2880 m) and the summit (3310 m): when the freezing level sits between the two, the mountain is split into rain or wet snow below and dry snow above. The Ski Meter reads the model at both elevations and scores the day with every point accounted for; the full report adds hourly timing, accumulation ranges and confidence tags so you can decide when to travel, not just whether.
