Sölden snow report
Two glaciers between 2,675 and 3,250 m mean a thin early accumulation is already skiable, which is why the World Cup opens here in October. The failure mode in autumn is wind and rain rather than missing snow. The run home to a 1,368 m village is the weak link, and the Rettenbach glacier lost 127 m of length in a single year.

Why it snows here
The Ötztal runs south into the main Alpine ridge behind two rain shadows: about 830 mm of precipitation a year at Obergurgl and only 675 mm at Vent, with the maximum falling in summer. Reliability here comes from being permanently cold and permanently glaciated, not from being snowy.

The number that matters most at Sölden is the difference between the base (1350 m) and the summit (3340 m): when the freezing level sits between the two, the mountain is split into rain or wet snow below and dry snow above.
