Gudauri snow report
One of the highest resort bases in Europe or Asia, and entirely above the treeline. That is both the appeal and the problem: superb open freeride terrain, and no visual reference anywhere on the hill in flat light. Avalanche terrain here is not patrolled to Alpine standards, and the freeride reputation should be read with that in mind.

Why it snows here
Gudauri sits on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus at the Jvari Pass. The range blocks damp westerly air loaded over the Black Sea and forces it up the windward faces, and the southern slopes take the heavier share. The 2,000 to 2,800 m subalpine belt this resort occupies is the snowiest band on the mountain.
Reading Gudauri like a forecaster
The number that matters most at Gudauri is the difference between the base (2200 m) and the summit (3270 m): when the freezing level sits between the two, the mountain is split into rain or wet snow below and dry snow above.
