Why it snows here
A deep valley under Mont Blanc with nearly 2,800 m of vertical relief. The Aiguille du Midi cable car reaches 3,842 m, where mid-winter temperatures rarely climb above freezing.

The number that matters most at Chamonix is the difference between the base (1035 m) and the summit (3842 m): when the freezing level sits between the two, the mountain is split into rain or wet snow below and dry snow above.
