How the start date is found. For each season this takes the longest unbroken run of days at 30 cm (12 in) or more, and counts it only when that run lasted at least 14 days, because a week of early snow that melts out is not a season starting.

Why it snows here
The east faces of Peaks 6 to 10 of the Tenmile Range, north of the Continental Divide, with the tree line near 3,505 m11,499 ft so the top 400 m1,312 ft of vertical is open alpine bowl. The town's own weather station records about 469 cm185 in a year against roughly 745 cm293 in on the hill, and that gap is the orographic signal. Season totals have run from 673 cm265 in to 985 cm388 in.
