Big Sky snow report
Half the terrain is graded advanced or harder, and the easiest run off Lone Peak is a single black. Opening-day acreage has swung by a factor of eighteen in four seasons, from 2,000 acres down to about 110, so the late-November date is held by snowmaking rather than by weather. Daily lifts stop in mid April; the late-April close is weekends only.

Why it snows here
Deep in the continental interior at the north end of the Madison Range: Pacific storms have already crossed the Cascades, the Idaho ranges and the Continental Divide before they arrive. That makes this a cold, low-density snow environment rather than a high-total one, with a January mean minimum near −13 °C at village level and roughly half the annual precipitation falling between May and July.
Reading Big Sky like a forecaster
The number that matters most at Big Sky is the difference between the base (2073 m) and the summit (3403 m): when the freezing level sits between the two, the mountain is split into rain or wet snow below and dry snow above.
